A text adventure descends into the machine.
PETSCII graphics. No hand-holding. No way back.
Enter the HyperViolet Universe — if you dare.
MACER is a pure text adventure for Commodore 64 Ultimate — no graphics, no sound effects, no safety net. Just you, the terminal, and a world that remembers every choice you make.
Built for IFComp 2026, MACER is the first entry point into the HyperViolet Universe — a transmedia world of interconnected games, novels, and stories that unfold across platforms and formats.
Type carefully. The machine is watching.
The Interactive Fiction Competition is the world's longest-running game design contest. Since 1995, IFComp has showcased creative storytelling and innovative game design from developers worldwide — from legendary masters to first-time creators.
MACER competes alongside dozens of original text adventures. Games are judged anonymously by the community. Winners are determined by voter choice, not critics or industry gatekeepers.
The Commodore 64 Ultimate represents a return to authentic retro computing. In an era of infinite polygons and blur, there's something profound about constraints — about text, parser logic, and imagination.
MACER honors a tradition stretching back to the earliest text adventures: Adventure, Zork, Infocom's golden age. Games where you didn't watch a story unfold — you *read* it, *typed* it, *became* it.
The C64 Ultimate carries that legacy forward, bringing a machine from 1982 into 2026 with all its character intact.
The Quill is interactive fiction development software from 1983—the tool that powered some of the most beloved text adventures of the era. It's a constraint by design: conditions, events, vocabulary limits, parser logic.
I chose the Quill not for convenience, but for challenge and authenticity. Learning game development the way developers did in the 1980s, working *within* limitations rather than around them.
You learn to draw by drawing stick figures first. Master the fundamentals—parser logic, conditional storytelling, player agency within bounds—and you understand the skeleton that holds all narrative games together. The Quill is that foundation.
MACER is one door into something much larger. The HyperViolet Universe is a transmedia world — interconnected games and novels sharing the same timeline, the same locations, the same weight of consequence. Each IP is an entry point. Each story deepens the whole.
